According to Hindu calendar Shravan is the fifth month. Shravana Masam or the month of Shravan in states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka which people follow the Varalakshmi Pooja or Varalakshmi Vratham. Varalakshmi Pooja is inviting goddess Lakshmi to stay in our house and give wealth. It is celebrated on the last Friday of the bright fortnight in the month of Ashada, corresponding to the English month of July-August. The worship of Maha Lakshmi is performed by married ladies to obtain good progeny, and for the long life of the husband.

Story of Varalakshmi Vratham:-

When Lord Eswara is resting in Kailasa giri, Goddess Parvathi approached eswara and asked him to tell a vratham that gives wealth and prosperity. The Lord explains about Varalakshmi Vratam. He say’s women performed Varalakshmi Vratham will get sowbagyam and good Wealth in house. Lord Eswara narrates the story and explains the process of performing the vratham to Goddess Parvathi.

There was a beautiful town called Kundinagaram located in the Kingdom of Vidarbha (Vidarba Rajyam). In that Kundinagram town there lived a humble and kind natured Brahmin woman named Charumathi. In her dream Goddess Adilakshmi directed her to perform Varalakshmi Vratham to fulfil her desires. Goddess Adilakshmi even explained her the details, procedure and when to do the pooja. She told her that the Friday just befor ethe Shravana Purnima is a completely apt day for the puja. Charumathi told her dream to her family, She performed the pooja by inviting Varalakshmi Devi to her house. They all chanted sloka
Lakshmi Ksheerasamudra rajatanyam sri rangadhameswareem
Dasibootha samastha devavanitham lokaika deepamkuram
Sri manmanda kataksha labdhivibhat brahmendra gangadharam
Twamtrayamlokyakutumbhineem sasijavandemukunda priyam
“Padmaasane Padmakare sarva lokaika poojithe
Narayana priyadevi supreethaa bhava sarvada”
The story says that impressed by their dedicated pooja Laksmi Devi appeared in front of them and blessed them with everything they ever wanted in life. Their houses did not have any lack of food ,lack of jewellery. The families in the town lived happily ever after doing this pooja every year. Since then the new spread and now the whole South India performs this pooja.

Shravan Somvaram or Mondays in the month of Shravan are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Many devotees fast on these days. Itis said that unmarried girls who want to get married shouldobserve theShravanSomvar fasts.

Mangala Gowri Pooja is performed by married women (sumangali) on all Tuesdays inShravan for the wellbeing of their husbands.Gowri (or Gauri) is also another name for Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva.

Shravan Shukravaram or Fridays in the Month of Shravan are dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity. For married women in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, the most important Shravan Shukravaram is the one that falls on the Friday before the full moon (Shravana Pournami Purvasta Shukravarey). This is the day on which Varalakshmi Vratamis performed.

Sri Varalakshmi Vratha Katha Prarambham:
Varalakshmi Vratha Katha (Legend or Story of Vara Laxmi Vratram)
Vara Laxmi Vrata is observed on the Second Friday of the Shravan month. Charumathi, a Brahmin woman lived in a town, Kundina. She was very humble and kind in her nature. She was very much devoted to her husband and family.
One night, Goddess Laxmi appeared in her dream and told her to worship Vara Laxmi and seek her blessings. Goddess Laxmi also explained the Vrata procedure and the best day to observe Vara Laxmi Vrata. Laxmi asked Charumathi to observe Varalaxmi Vrata on the Second Friday of Shravana Month.
Charumathi informed about the dream to his husband and family. She also told to her friends and the word spread throughout the town. On the Second Friday of Shravan Month, Charumathi along with her family, friends and the women of the town observe Vara Laxmi Vrata. They worshipped Vara Laxmi with utmost devotion and offered special recipes and fruits to please her. Goddess Vara Laxmi appeared before them and granted boons to all of them. Their houses were filled with grains, diamonds, jewels and gold. They all lived happily in their rest of life. Since the time, women have begun observing Vara Laxmi Vrata every year on the specific Friday.
